The inner-person – your true self – is your character; the outer-person is your personality. There are many ways we could define personality, but it is simply your social mask – the person most people think themselves to be. But you are much more than your personality. For each of us, therefore, there is a personal journey to be made. It is this spiritual journey to find and listen to our true self that is the essence of personal development. I confess I have not always believed that life holds a definite purpose for everyone, but it is something I have come to believe over the course of time. With an understanding of your life-purpose, it is a natural next-step to be thinking in terms of mission and goals – in other words, how do we achieve our life-purpose? And that is what much of the material around this topic is mainly concerned with; what we might call ‘success literature’ which, according to Stephen Covey – author of the 7 Habits of Highly effective People – has been around in the USA since 1776. Interestingly, as Covey himself points out, much of the early success literature was character-based; whereas much of the more recent material is personality-based. It concerns your personal journey to discover your true-self and your life-purpose. At our main site, we have lot’s of great resources to help. But I suggest you start with our free book the 7 Keys to success which is concerned with the subject of life-purpose.
Productivity: The problem that many people make when they set goals is that they start cutting corners to get what they want and they end up bitter and discouraged in the end because goal-attainment doesn’t work that way. It’s like someone who wants to stand on the podium and receive a gold medal in the Olympics without putting in the time to train. While we can’t take shortcuts to reach our goal, we can shorten the time it takes to reach those goals by being more productive. Successful people are masters of productivity and it’s no mistake that they are able to achieve more in less time than most people out there. Learning how to be productive and making the best use of the time that you have is an important part of personal development. 1. Motivation: If goals are the path towards personal success, then motivation is the fuel to get you there. Motivation is a necessary aspect of personal development because nearly all of us know that a lack of motivation considerably hinders our goal attainment process. Learning how to master your motivation can help you reach your success faster than you ever thought possible.
Only a handful of people view personal development as a means of correcting minor problems (which leads to lowering stress, in the long run). Finding an adequate barometer given the fact that it works different for different people, how do you empirically measure “personal growth”. It’s too difficult, again everyone grows at their own rate. People need to be guided to finding out who they are underneath it all, and then growth can happen. In India, Yoga techniques make up a number of disciplines including meditation (Prajna Yoga) stretching and postures (Hatha Yoga), breathing (Prana Yoga) sexual mastery (Tantra yoga) and others. Personal development frameworks consist of goals or benchmarks that define the end-point, strategies or plans for reaching goals, measurement and assessment of progress, levels or stages that define milestones along the development path, and a feedback system to support progress. In other words, they want to become peak-performing individuals. On the other hand, a person who is not able or willing to move forward in their life and pursue happiness and life success due to past illness, traumas or injuries that prevent them from doing so are in need of treatment or therapy to aid in their recovery. In the scope of my own coaching practice, I view personal development, self-improvement, and personal growth as all the same thing. I view self-help as slightly different than personal development in that self-help topics tend to be less focused on personal growth and more on remedying a certain condition, hence, that is why there are many books in the self-help sections of bookstores and libraries that focus on treatment of problems, rather than on creating peak performance.
